The Matzevot Fragments of Treblinka's "Black Road"
Dec 30, 2024
Edward Janes and Alan Metnick
In early 2023 Alan Metnick (Slawatycze) and Edward Janes (Przasnysz) partnered in a special FJCP project to advocate for bringing a sense of dignity to a condition at the Treblinka death camp. In short, shattered matzevot fragments were observed by both Metnick and Janes in the road connecting TII and TI. Both men were struck with a sense of revulsion; knowing how the fragments got there; at their unprotected status; at their lack of voice.
The Metnick / Janes effort focused on advocating for a solution involving at least three NGO's, the "Rabbinical Commission for Jewish Cemeteries in Poland", the Treblinka Museum and of course, the Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich. Negotiations continued over the ensuing months drawing in several academics, officials from the Ministry of Culture and later the International Auschwitz Council (note, Metnick / Janes were not decisionmakers, only advocates). Eventually agreement was reached; the road would be (and has been) closed to vehicular traffic as a minimal protection; the fragments would be (and have been) studied and inventoried by an archaeological team of experts; and sign boards will be installed to educate visitors and give the fragments a voice.
The work at Treblinka continues; as will efforts to preserve Jewish memory throughout Poland.
